Research has shown that diet can have a significant impact towards the development of gout. It is considered to be a form of arthritis that can cause severe pain and discomfort. The pain is generally located in the joints of the big toe, which can often make it difficult to walk comfortably. Gout is caused by elevated uric levels that produce crystals which lodge to the joints of the feet. Foods that can trigger gout can include red meat, shellfish, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. Additionally, foods that are good for gout can consist of all fruits, low-fat dairy products, and vegetables. Patients who have gout attacks can find accomplishing daily activities difficult to complete, and this may be a result of the debilitating pain that often accompanies this ailment. If you are experiencing gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.
Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

The feet are considered to be the foundation of the body, and heel pain for any reason may hinder accomplishing daily activities. The structure of the foot is designed to protect the foot from potential impact, and it is beneficial to know the reason why existing heel pain occurs. There are several foot conditions that can affect the heel, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon injuries, and bursitis of the foot. The bottom of the foot is where the plantar fascia is found, and it can cause severe pain and discomfort if it should become inflamed. There are specific stretches that can be performed which may help to diminish the pain from plantar fasciitis. Achilles tendon injuries and bursitis may be improved when under the care of a podiatrist, and it is suggested that a consultation be scheduled.
Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM of Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

The Achilles tendon connects the heel with two large muscles in the calf that allows the foot to push off. This pushing off motion is necessary for walking, running, and jumping. Achilles tendonitis is a painful inflammation of this tendon where it connects at the heel. In younger people, Achilles tendonitis may develop from overuse. This may be from increasing the intensity of an activity suddenly, running too often on hard surfaces for longer distances, jumping excessively, or wearing shoes without proper support. It may also occur if the foot turns in or out abruptly. In older and middle-aged adults, Achilles tendonitis may be caused by arthritis, bone spurs, and other conditions that aggravate or put excess tension on the tendon. If you have pain in your heel a podiatrist can examine you to determine the origin and develop an effective treatment plan that is specific for you.
Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM of Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is the Achilles Tendon?
The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.
What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?
There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Rupture Symptoms
Treatment and Prevention
Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

Many people take their feet for granted, despite their importance despite the fact they are the foundation of the body. There are simple techniques that can improve the overall health of your feet which will have a positive effect on the rest of your body. These helpful tips can include washing and drying the feet thoroughly every day, followed by applying a good moisturizer. When the toes are trimmed properly, painful foot conditions such as ingrown toenails may be prevented. Maintaining a hygiene routine for your feet may play a significant role in preventing athlete's foot, which can make the feet feel itchy and uncomfortable. If you would like additional information about the importance of practicing everyday foot care techniques, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.
Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Everyday Foot Care
Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.
It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

There are five long metatarsal bones in the front of the foot which connect the toes with the tarsal bones of the mid-and-hind-foot. These metatarsals bear a great deal of weight during walking, running and jumping, which makes them more susceptible to tiny cracks known as stress fractures. These stress fractures occur over time through repetitive activity which first weakens, and eventually cracks these metatarsals. Stress fractures in the metatarsals can be caused by osteoporosis or other activities that can weaken bones, irregular body mechanics (how the body moves), or a sudden change in physical activity. Symptoms of a stress fracture can include discomfort ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain which may wax and wane, along with bruising or swelling. If you are experiencing pain in the front of your foot, or any part of your foot, a podiatrist can help diagnose and treat your condition.
Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.
How Are They Caused?
Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon. Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.
Risk Factors
Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

The bottom and side of the big toe is generally the location where a bunion develops. It is considered to be a deformity and can appear for a variety of reasons. These can include genetic factors, and wearing shoes that do not have enough room for the toes to move freely in. Additionally, existing medical conditions such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis may cause a bunion to develop. If the bunion is mild relief may be found when orthotics are worn, or when the bunion is covered with a protective pad. Severe bunions may require surgery to correct them permanently. If you notice signs of a small bump on the side of the big toe, please confer with a podiatrist as quickly as possible. Early treatment can slow down or stop a bunion's progression.
If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM of Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is a Bunion?
Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.
Causes
Symptoms
In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

When the outer layer of skin on the sole of the feet comes in contact with the human papilloma virus, thickened growths called plantar warts can develop. The virus—which can lurk in public showers, pools, and locker rooms—enters through tiny breaks in the skin on the bottom of feet. These flat, rough masses sometimes have tiny black “dots” in the center, which are actually tiny blood vessels. They can be uncomfortable at times—especially if they occur on weight-bearing areas of the feet and toes. While verrucas can often heal on their own, they can be stubborn, and you may want to see a podiatrist to help get rid of them.
Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.
About Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.
While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.
Symptoms
Treatment
To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are designed to correct a variety of foot-related problems including foot pain, knee pain, and lower back pain as well. Common ways that orthotics may address these issues include aligning the feet, relieving pressure on the feet, helping the foot function, supporting the ankle, or reducing the chance for injuries. Orthotics are also often used for patients with plantar fasciitis, arthritis, bunions, flat feet, heel spurs, high arches, and hammertoe. Orthotics can be customized, and a podiatrist can use a variety of methods such as a physical exam, imaging (X-rays, bone scans, MRIs), and observations of your walking pattern to determine the right customizations that are needed for you. Patients who are interested in orthotics should consult with a podiatrist.
If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Are Orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.
Over-the-Counter Inserts
Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.
Prescription Orthotics
If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.
If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

There are several reasons why elderly people can be more prone to various foot conditions. As we age some individuals may feel general body weakness or fatigue, difficulty in balancing, and lack of physical activity which may even cause one’s natural gait to become altered. Common foot ailments that older people may suffer from can consist of bunions, corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, and heel pain from loss of the fat pad over time. Additionally, poor circulation can occur, and this can cause the feet to swell or tingle. Other conditions like diabetes can wreak havoc on the feet as wounds that are left unnoticed can lead to amputation in severe cases. It is extremely important to maintain proper foot care among the elderly as problems in the feet can be indicative of larger health issues. Trimming the toenails straight across can be essential in preventing ingrown toenails and wearing shoes that fit properly may help to avoid hammertoe and bunions. Elderly feet should be inspected every day as well as washed and dried thoroughly, especially in between the toes. If you need help with your feet or take care of an elder’s feet, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can recommend effective remedies and techniques.
Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
The Elderly and Their Feet
As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.
Common Conditions
Susceptible Infections
Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tendon that runs along the bottom of the foot, is the most common cause of heel pain. This condition can develop following long hours of standing, walking, running, or participating in sports. In rarer cases, an acute injury to the bottom of the foot can damage the plantar fascia and bring forth early stages of this condition. Having flat or overpronated feet, high arches, wearing ill-fitting and uncomfortable shoes, having tight calf muscles, or being overweight or obese can also cause plantar fasciitis. If you are suffering from heel pain, it is strongly suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.

Active children may be more likely to experience heel pain. This pain can be indicative of a condition known as Sever’s disease, and can target children and young adolescents. This uncomfortable ailment affects the growth plate in the heel and can occur as a result of extensive pressure exerted on the area where the Achilles tendon meets the heel. Parents may notice their child may begin to limp, in addition to experiencing a decrease in flexibility if their child is afflicted with Sever’s disease. Prompt treatment generally begins with stopping the activity that caused this condition, and it is beneficial to rest the affected foot. Some children find it may help to perform specific stretches that target the Achilles tendon and calf. If you notice your child has symptoms of Sever’s disease, it is strongly suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can determine what the most effective treatment is.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM from Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Morton’s neuroma is often caused by high heels or tight shoes which can pinch toes together, causing nerves to become compressed or aggravated and thickened in response to the irritation. Aside from improper footwear, other factors—such as having flat feet, bunions, hammertoes, high arches, or participating in certain sports activities—may also put pressure on the nerves between the toes and contribute to the development of Morton’s neuroma. This condition most typically occurs between the third and fourth toes, but may also develop between the second and third toes. Symptoms of Morton’s neuroma may include a feeling of having a marble or pebble in your shoe, a burning sensation in the ball of your foot, numb toes, pain radiating from your toes, or trouble walking. Sometimes people with Morton’s neuroma have no symptoms at all. If you suspect you may have Morton’s neuroma, seek the care of a podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis and treatment.
Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact Julie Jurd-Sadler, DPM of Progressive Podiatry. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.
Morton’s Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.
What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?
Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. In order to figure out the best treatment for your neuroma, it’s recommended to seek the care of a podiatrist who can diagnose your condition and provide different treatment options.
